898 Child Marriages Stopped during Lockdown with the Help of Childline Says Smriti Irani

More than 898 child marriages were reported in the country in 2020, with the majority being from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, told via twitter by Union Cabinet Minister Smriti Irani. All the children marriages were prevented by responding to calls from the childline

Condemn Child Marriage

Between March 20 and April 20, as many as 898 child marriages were pre-vented by on-ground teams working rapidly in response to Childline's SOS calls — 1098. Most of these cases refer to the time after the country-wide lockout took place starting on March 25. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are the top five states registering such grievances linked to child marriage attempts, Outten including adolescents. Data gathered by Childline India, the voluntary organization that operates the helpline, reveal that 18,217 of the more than 6 lakh calls replied by the information support line and concerns.
