Aarogya Setu App! What is that?

Aarogya Setu App (lit. 'Safety Bridge') is a COVID-19 contact tracing app developed under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, by the National Informatics Centre. Aarogya Setu is a mobile application developed by the Government of India to connect essential health services with the people of India in our combined fight against COVID-19. The App is aimed at augmenting the initiatives of the Government of India, particularly the Department of Health, in proactively reaching out to and informing the users of the app regarding risks, best practices, and relevant advisories pertaining to the containment of COVID-19.

Features of the Aarogya Setu App

This app's specified aim is to disseminate information and link critical health resources to the Indians. This software will improve the Department of Health's efforts to address COVID-19 threats, and exchange best practices and recommendations. This is a contact tracking software that uses the GPS and Bluetooth features of smartphones to detect infection with coronaviruses.  

Aarogya Setu app is available for Android and iOS mobile operating systems. How to Download the Aarogya Setu App

Aarogya Setu crossed five million downloads within the three days of its launch, making it one of the most popular government apps in It is the world's fastest-growing mobile app with more than 50 million installs on the platform, at just 13 days after launching in India on April 2, 2020. So far 299,694 downloads are recorded in the Google Play Store. Here's how you can download the Aarogya Setu App.

  • The app is available on the app stores of Android Phone and iPhone so first Install the app. The direct link provided below.

  • Once the app is installed on the phone switch on Bluetooth and GPS of your phone.

  • To give permission to the app to access your location set the location sharing to 'Always'.

  • After installing on your phone the Aarogya Setu app will detect your device by default.

  • As the app comes with 11 languages so it will ask you to choose your preferred language out of them. You will have to choose the language after installing the app.

  • To use the app it is a must to register on the app with your mobile number. After this, you will have to enter other information about you like your name, age, profession, international travel history.

  • Once you will submit all the above-mentioned information the app will cross-check the detail given by you with the detail present in the government database.

  • After this, the app will use the proximity of Bluetooth and suggests whether you are safe or not.

  • If the information provided by you shows that you are not safe then the app will suggest you isolate and take precautions.

How to Use the Aarogya Setu App

The steps required to use the app are as follows:

1. After you've run the app, allow it to access your device's location, as prompted.

2. You'll get an OTP, enter it and you are on.

3. Choose your gender from the options given.

4. Enter your full name, then age, and then profession, as asked.

5. You'll be asked about your foreign travel history in the last 30 days.

Give the appropriate answer. Your foreign travel history, if any, will be matched with that of those who've tested positive, with the help of the ICMR database.

Aarogya Setu App Privacy Concerns

Aarogya Setu App’s privacy policy declares that information collected will be stored on a server that is operated and managed by the government. Information collected such as name, phone number, age, sex, profession, and countries visited in the last 30 days will be stored. All the information that is collected from the users while registering on the app will be stored with a unique digital ID (DiD)
The privacy policy declares that all personal information collected from the users will be purged from the app after 30 days if it hasn’t been updated on the server. Data of those who have not tested positive for Covid-19 will be cleared from the server within 45 days, and for those who have tested positive, it will be 60 days. For those who have unregistered their account, the information provided by them will expire after 30 days. It also says that user data is encrypted at all levels from the entry till the endpoint, and even on another user’s device when the DiDs are exchanged.

AarogyaSetu App - Contact Tracing App

The Aarogya Setu application acts as a one-stop solution for spreading awareness about Covid-19 within the country, helping self diagnose users, provide the latest updates, and even to store and display e-pass. However, the most prominent feature is to trace contacts and create a reliable network for the government to spot potential Covid-19 victims.

Once a user registers on the application, the app asks for uninterrupted Bluetooth access and even location data. Access to Bluetooth is the key essential for the app to establish close range propinquity between two people. When two smartphones with Aarogya Setu App installed come in each other's Bluetooth range, the app will gather information. If one of the two people has already tested positive for COVID-19, the app will notify the other person and in the process allow the government to trace potential cases. The alerts are followed by instructions to help self isolate and even provide support if you develop symptoms.

Aarogya Setu App E-Pass

The E-pass feature is yet to be launched in the Aarogya Setu App in a few places. It is a feature that allows people to travel within the city for accessing essential services. With this app, the government aims to make people more aware of the spread of the Covid-19 cases in India, by informing the citizens with relevant information. The Aarogya Setu app supports 11 languages. Once you have downloaded the app, you need to register with your mobile number. Then the app will have to ask you to enter your health stats and other details. To enable tracking, you will have to keep your GPS/location and Bluetooth services on.
The e-pass will be showcased with a QR code along with a unique six-digit alphanumeric ID that will contain all the necessary information about you and the types of service you are related to. This includes company name, supply chain partner,  e-pass valid to date, location and nature of work.
