Testing facilities

Initially, coronavirus research was limited to government ICMR facilities. These were 62 in number but the number of government research facilities increased to 126 during the course of March. The government has allowed private laboratories to study coronavirus in India, after much deliberation.

ICMR has approved 51 private laboratories to carry out COVID-19 tests in the country. However, the number of research facilities is still very small as compared to the country's population. According to 2011 census results, states like Bihar only have one testing facility for over 104 million people.
