The 21 Rashtriya Rifles Sunday lost only its second Commanding Officer on the line of duty in its three decades of battling terrorism when twice-decorated Colonel Ashutosh Sharma rendered the ultimate sacrifice when saving civilians held hostage. The 21 Rashtriya Rifles (21 -RR), containing officers and people from the Guards Unit, have received the honor of being named "Triple Centurions" for having killed over 300 terrorists. On August 21, 2000, the battalion lost its first commander, Colonel Rajinder Chauhan.

A Indian Army colonel, major and two jawans along with a J&K police sub-inspector were killed at an encounter in Handwara in North Kashmir on Sunday in which two militants were killed as well.
