A Disinfectant Tunnel to Sanitization

Taking a lead from the Tirupur district administration that set up a Covid-19 protection disinfection tunnel, the Madurai municipality set up a similar system at Madurai College ground. One of the city's temporary markets functioning on the ground. Officials from the Madurai Corporation said the tunnel was constructed with the support of an NGO, Yaavum Inidhe. It is hoped the tunnel would protect hundreds of business throngers. These tunnels should pop up in a couple more areas, where huge amounts of people are turning up. Health officials said the distilled sodium hypochlorite solution is pumped by nozzles when citizens walk into the tunnel.

People are told to move with lifted hands, to protect the entire body. "Salesmen and market visitors are sanitized to wash their hands regularly While the disinfection tunnel can operate to a greater degree, hand washing is still necessary," an official said.

Cooperative minister Sellur K Raju visited the market and inspected the tunnel on Sunday with corporation commissioner S Visakan and urban engineering S Arasu in attendance. The minister said the corporation has so far established temporary markets at 35 places after closing major markets to better manage the crowd.
