Nathan Lyon Hails: Incredible Tim Paine, backs him to continue as Australia Captain

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon says that since taking over as Test Captain during difficult times, Tim Paine has been "completely unbelievable" and expects the wicketkeeper to remain in the role for the near future. Paine was handed over the job in 2018 following South Africa's illegal ball-tampering scandal for 12 months by then-captain Steve Smith.

Australia lost to India a first home series, but last year under Paine regained the Ashes, who said he would welcome Smith's return to work after serving another one-year ban on leadership roles.

"For the Australian cricket team, Tim Paine was simply amazing," he told reporters Tuesday at a video conference. "The way he went out and led this squad, it was amazing, to be honest ... I sincerely believe that every day he is growing, he seems to be getting better as a captain.

"Back then, if you looked around that change-room, I think Tim Paine really got up in my head, really got up and could take on the challenge," he added.

"In the toughest moment in Australian cricket, he took the captaincy on, and he's done an outstanding job."

With Australia postponing its tour of Bangladesh in June in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lyon looks forward to India's return later this year, even though the matches must be played behind closed doors.

"I am excited about India's prospect of coming out to Australia; it's up there amid the Ashes with the biggest series," he said. Protection Status
