On this Day
Bill Lawry and Bob Simpson created Australia's biggest opening partnership on May 6, precisely 52 years to the present day. The pair accomplished the feat during a test match at the Kensington Oval in Barbados versus West Indies. Both Lawry and Simpson also achieved double-centuries in the same Test match innings.
Lawry hit 210 runs and Simpson crushed 201 runs. They also contributed 382 runs for the opening wicket in total, which is Australia's highest opening partnership to date. The gigantic opening stand wasn't enough for Australia to win as Seymour Nurse of West Indies replied the Simpson-led Aussies with a double-century to send the match to a draw.
