On this Day: Sachin Tendulkar became the youngest batsman to score 3000 ODI runs

 25 years ago, on this day, Sachin Tendulkar scored his fourth century in the ODI format during the Asia Cup match vs. Sri Lanka and thus became the youngest batsman in the world to cross 3000 runs in the format. Tendulkar and Prabhakar, opening the batting for India, got off to a magnificent start and always looked at the chase in charge. The 161-run opening stand sets India on track to a victory.

Sachin did not hold out

Batting first in the Sharjah must-win match, Sri Lanka was limited to 202/9. Top-scored Hashan Tillakaratne with 48. Venkatesh Prasad and Javagal Srinath selected the bowlers while Anil Kumble and Manoj Prabhakar both chipped in with one wicket each.

Tendulkar and Prabhakar, opening the batting for India, got off to a magnificent start and always looked at the chase in charge. The 161-run opening stand sets India on track to a victory. Prabhakar had fallen for 60, but Tendulkar kept on and had a good century of notching. Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga joined the crowd as he crossed the century mark in applauding the new feat of the Little Master.

 

Sachin did not hold out on 112 as India with 16.5 overs to spare romped home. There were 15 boundaries and one six in Tendulkar's innings. Tendulkar became the youngest to cross 3000 ODI runs, with the help of this blow. 15 days before his 22nd birthday, he had gone past this mark.
