The Ministry of Power issued a few clarifications on Saturday regarding PM Narendra Modi's appeal to citizens to voluntarily switch off lights between 9:00 pm to 9:09 pm on April 5 to stave off the coronavirus threat. The apprehensions expressed that this may cause instability in grid and voltage fluctuation, which may harm electrical appliances.

The Ministry further said that there had no call to switch off street lights or appliances at homes. Only lights should switch off. The lights at hospitals and other essential services will remain on. Local bodies have advised keeping street lights on for public safety.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed concern over the call for switching off lights for nine minutes on Sunday night, saying it could profoundly impact the power grid stability.
