Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja told reporters that "the man wasn't a state patient and came to Kannur for treatment, all of his relatives in Mahe."

His family of nine has tested coronavirus negative, she said.

Mahe is an enclave of Puducherry, a former French colony that shares its borders with two districts of Kerala — Kannur, and Kozhikode.

Kerala and Mahe teams have traced nearly all of the deceased's contacts, and a list of 83 people has been prepared, the minister said.

"We tracked nearly all of the deceased's contacts. A contact list was prepared of 83 people," she said, adding the patient's condition was severe and every measure was taken to save his life.

The man, a social worker, had assisted in various events, including some weddings, offered prayers at a mosque, and had traveled in different vehicles.
