Uruguay Woman stopped for not wearing mask argues with Delhi Police

An Uruguayan woman working at the embassy allegedly told police on the 18th day of the nationwide lockdown that she had no contact from her office about any such measure. Administrative head Valentina Obispo made the argument when police officers, including SHO Vasant Vihar Ravi Shankar, stopped her for cycling at Paschimi Marg on Saturday evening without wearing a mask.

Vasant Vihar's Residents Welfare Association (RWA) has been complaining to police about diplomats and other foreigners living in the region coming out without masks for jogging and cycling. Delhi government has made it mandatory for people to wear masks when stepping out as a move to monitor the spread of novel coronavirus.

Police said they had been told about some foreigners standing outside the UN High Commissioner for Refugees building in Vasant Vihar. Some five foreigners were told to leave the area, a senior officer said, and a little later the police staff patrolling Paschimi Marg noticed the Uruguayan woman cycling without a mask and gloves.

She declined to oblige when asked to display her identification card, upon which police wrote her name.

Police video-recorded the entire incident, the official said.

When the incident happened a representative from the area's Resident Welfare Association was present. He told the police that they will take all steps and seek to convince the foreign nationals remaining in the region to follow the guidelines, the official said.
