World Hand Hygiene Day 2020: World Hand Hygiene Day 2020 is observed on May 5th. Healthcare plays a major role in preventing several infections. According to WHO, hand hygiene is a single most important measure to prevent the transmission of bacteria in hospitals and other places.

World Hand Hygiene Day: May 5

The theme is "SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands". It is aligned with the Year of the Nurses and the Midwife. The main aim is to recognise nurses and midwives who are working and helping us in fighting with COVID-19 pandemic. The day highlights their critical roles in infection prevention. 

The main objective of the campaign is to maintain and recognise that hand washing as one of the most essential and effective ways to reduce the spread of  COVID-19 virus. The year 2020 is designated by the World Health Assembly as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

WHO and partners through the campaign of 2020 are to:

Motivate and inspire hand hygiene and behaviour change

Make hand hygiene as a global priority.

Hand hygiene is to clean hands with or without water or another liquid to remove microorganisms. Medical hand hygiene aims to cleanse the hands of pathogens that may include bacteria or viruses and can consist of chemicals which can cause personal harm or disease.
