Despite not getting a bid, Brathwaite is confident that he will be part of IPL. “Hopefully I will be in IPL in some capacity may be replacement player or in commentary,” Brathwaite told Delhi-NCR based pet channel on Instagram. The 31-year-old drew a bid worth Rs 5 crore in IPL 2019 auction while he had joined Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.2 crore in 2018.
Despite drawing fat paycheques, Brathwaite only got two chances last year while he played four matches in 2018. The West Indies all-rounder is not a part of the national team now. He was removed as T20I captain in 2019 and was dropped from ODI and T20I squads as well.
If not sold, do commentary!
In past times, the unsold cricketers have gone on to do commentary in the league. Darren Sammy, Irfan Pathan, and a few other cricketers took up the commentary duties after they failed to get a bid in the auction. In 2014, the former Australia batsman David Hussey created history when he was signed up by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while he was doing commentary.
It is hoped, Brathwaite can also be roped in as a replacement player. Delhi Capitals, who had bought Chris Woakes, might seek his replacement whenever the tournament takes place. Brathwaite is surely one of the players they might consider signing up.
IPL 2020 Auction:
Chris Morris bagged a contract worth Rs.10 crore with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He was expected to go unsold. On the other hand, Chris Lynn was sort of confirmed to reach that mark 'of going unsold'. He drew only one bid and went to Mumbai Indians at his base price of Rs.2 crore.
Varun Chakravarthy earned a big amount and joined Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs.4 crore. He was unlike other mystery spinners who have been part of IPL in the past.
