What is a Ration Card?
Ration card is a document provided by the State Govtserves as proof of nationality. This is an essential document that not only acts as a proof of identification but also shows the economic status of an individual. Ration cards are issued based on the total members in a family, and each ration card category determines the entitlement of an individual to certain rationed goods. Individuals with higher earning ability can not get rations at a subsidised rate.
Who can apply?
Anyone who is a legal Indian citizen may only apply for the Ration Card. Under the law, children under the age of 18 (minors) are included in the ration card of their parents. A person can, however, apply for a separate Ration Card once they are over the age of 18.
Types of Ration Cards:
There are two types of ration cards. The ration cards Below Poverty-Line (BPL) and the ration cards which are not BPL. Blue/Yellow/Green/Red Ration cards are available in the BPL ration card type, divided by colours depending on the access to different food, fuel, and other goods subsidies. White Ration cards are provided for those living above the poverty line.
How to transfer Ration Card?
If an individual is moved or relocated to another city, and the ration card is to be transferred from one state to another, then the individual must submit an application to the new jurisdiction's nearest ration office. A written request must be sent along with proof of the new address, and the required application fee must be paid after the transfer is processed. Similarly, when a woman in the family is married and moves to a husband's home, a new ration card is given or updated. For this purpose, the application must be submitted to remove her name from the parent's ration card and add her name to the husband's family card.
