History of World Milk Day
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declared June 1 as a World milk day in 2001. To celebrate the contribution of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods, and nutrition. World milk day is celebrated every year since 2001 to raise awareness among the people about the nutrient value of milk. To provide information about the nutrient value of milk activities are organized to raise awareness for milk and milk products. World milk day does not follow a special theme in the world. People celebrate the World Milk day by organizing many activities related to milk. People start this day with a cup of milk and drink milk before going to bed. People prepare some candies or some other items with milk as an ingredient. People buy many dairy products on this day to support the dairy sectors. People celebrate this day with a variety of themes. People conduct a lecture on the importance of milk to support the dairy sectors and their products. 2019 Theme and Celebration
The theme for 2019 is “Drink milk: Today and everyday”. Various campaigns are organized at IVRI which focuses on safe hygiene, milk production, and consumption. Poster making competitions were held for children on the importance of milk in human life. Motivational lectures emphasizing the necessity of milk consumption were also conducted. The day encourages the benefits of dairy products related to health and nutrition and passion of the sectors to feed our communities.
National Milk Day
In India, National Milk Day is observed on November 26 every year. The day was initiated by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) in 2014. The National Milk Day is celebrated on 26 November to honour Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is considered to be the father of India's White Revolution.
